LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Metro Police tell WAVE 3 that a 10-year-old girl was shot in the arm and was taken to Kosair Children's hospital with non-life threatening injuries Sunday morning.
The shooting occurred in the 500 block of N. 31st Street around 11:30 a.m. May 15. An LMPD spokesperson says a person or persons fired several rounds into the house when the girl was hit by a bullet in a bedroom. No one else in the home was injured.
Police say the suspect or suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle. Police did find a handgun that they believe was used in the shooting, and we're told detectives are following up on leads.
The 10-year-old was conscious and alert when she was taken to the hospital.
Neighbors describe the girl as "nice and fun-loving" and say they are shocked by the shooting.
Mike Purgerson and his family have lived in Portland for years, just a few doors down from where the girl was shot. He says violence in his neighborhood is getting worse.
"It's stupid," Purgerson said. "It's not safe to be around here. I mean the way these houses are built, they're all dumps. The only way you're going to protect your house is have a concrete wall where a missile can't go through it. They don't build houses like that."
Several neighbors who did not want to go on camera told us they believe the shooting may have been over a $100 debt someone in the house owes the shooter or shooters.
Police say there is no connection to a shooting that happened Friday night in the 500 block of South Eighth Street that left a 3-year-old in critical condition.
