ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – A Hardin County elderly woman is still in the hospital after police discovered she was abused by someone in her own home.
This crime doesn't end with abuse, Elizabethtown Police say the man they arrested is also accused of stealing several thousand dollars from the woman.
On Saturday, police were called to a home in the 200 block of Adams Road in Elizabethtown.
"That's the first time I've seen cops outside," said Santana Smith who lives across the street.
Smith says she was shocked to see an elderly woman carried off on a stretcher and a man in the back of a police car. That man police say is 36-year-old Joseph Starks.
"He's been with her for so long, so long," said Georgia Sleeper, a cousin of the victim. "I just couldn't believe it."
Sleeper lives next door and says her cousin raised Starks. According to the arrest citation, the house was in extremely poor condition. The victim is a woman in her 80s and was found by police not able to get out of bed with sores on her legs. Police stated she seemed to have dementia.
Sleeper says the woman's husband came over and told her what happened. "He wouldn't give her water or see that she took her medicine and all," said Sleeper.
Sleeper says she had no idea that was happening next door. She says the woman's husband works during the day at Fort Knox.
The citation states documents led police to find out he was also taking money.
"I cried, you know, tears just rolled down to know that," said Sleeper.
Starks is charged with abuse and neglect of an adult and exploiting an adult. He has since been released from jail, but was ordered by a judge to have no contact with the victim.
