SOUTHGATE, KY (WAVE) - One of the deadliest fires in American history happed on this date in 1977.
The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Southgate, Kentucky killed 165 people and injured 70 others.
It happened on a warm Saturday night during a Memorial Day weekend as over 2 thousand people packed the popular club.
The official investigation never reached a unanimous conclusion, but the factor most often cited is faulty aluminum wiring.
Other reports point to overcrowding, combustible ceiling tiles and the lack of a proper evacuation plan or automatic sprinklers.
