101st Airborne soldier killed in 1985 plane crash honored

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Spc. Gregory Owens became the 435th fallen veteran Monday to be added to the Patriots Peace Memorial on River Road.

A concrete block removed from a wall, and then a glass plate bearing Owens' name replaces it.

He and 247 other soldier's died in a plane crash in Newfoundland in December 1985 as they were returning to Fort Campbell from a peace-keeping mission in the Sinai .

They had just spent Christmas conducting a peace keeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula.

Al Owens Soldier's Father

"He was raised around military and he wanted to fly so bad," said the soldier's father, Al Owens. "He joined the army And waited for this slot. He worked on helicopters - he was the helicopter crew chief. And he loved the 101st Airborne. He loved flying Hueys, and he loved what he was doing."

After his death, Owens was interred with full military honors at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.

The patriots peace memorial added its first name in 2002.
