JAMESTOWN, KY(AP) - A former small-town mayor has been chosen teacher of the year by the The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the History Channel and Preserve America.
The Kentucky Historical Society announced Monday that Donnie Wilkerson, now a fifth-grade American history teacher at Jamestown Elementary School in southern Kentucky, had received the honor.
Wilkerson began teaching at Jamestown seven years ago after a diverse career as a small-business owner and as mayor of Jamestown from 1993 through 1998.
A panel of judges said Wilkerson "makes social studies come alive" for his students. He will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in the running to be named the National History Teacher of the Year this fall.
