LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville man in his 50s is dead just minutes after being taken into police custody. LMPD says the man fell down and was unresponsive after being put in handcuffs. He was taken to University Hospital where he died.
Police say an officer was on routine patrol just after 6 p.m. in West Louisville when he stopped a man who was acting strangely rocking back and forth.
Deputy Chief Vince Robison says when the officer went up to talk to him the man took off. He finally stopped on a porch and let the officer put him in handcuffs.
Robison believes the man died after a medical emergency, and it was just a coincidence that he was in police custody, but he promises a full investigation.
"Our public integrity unit is on the scene conducting a canvas of the neighbors to see if they've seen anything. We're also interviewing the officer. The officer is four year officer and will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete," Robison said.
That is standard procedure. Robison says the officer pulled out his taser but never used it.
He also told us the man was listed in their system as emotionally disturbed and has a history with the Crisis Intervention Team. The coroner and medical examiner will work together to figure out just how the man died.
