House near Churchill Downs heavily damaged in fire

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) - A house near Churchill Downs was heavily damaged in an early morning fire Tuesday. The blaze started around 3:30 a.m. in the 600 block of M Street. 

According to Louisville Fire & Rescue spokesman Salvador Melendez, when fire crews arrived at the scene at 3:37 a.m., they encountered heavy fire and smoke coming through the first floor and side windows of the two-story house.

Melendez says the fire started in a first floor living room, where it was contained. The rest of the house sustained smoke and water damage. 

Damage to the home and its furnishings is estimated at around $50,000.

fire caused an estimated $50,000 in structure and content damage. Louisville Metro Arson Squad is investigating the cause. It took 22 firefighters 17 minutes to control the fire. No one was injured. The displaced family of four will be staying with family members.
