LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Wednesday was a busy night for Louisville Metro Police with officers involved in two chases. Those chases happening on both sides of downtown, the first at 10th Street and Ali, the second at Brownsboro and Hillcrest.
It all started around 8:45 pm at Lindsey Avenue and Brownsboro Road. Police say they noticed a suspicious Lincoln, and once they ran the tags, they realized the car was stolen. Police tried to stop the Lincoln but the driver decided to lead them on a chase instead.
Police say officers followed the stolen car for about two miles. Once the suspect reached the intersection of Hillcrest and Brownsboro, police say he ran a red light, struck another car, and slammed into a utility pole.
Police say the suspect then took off on foot running through backyards. Officers were not far behind, and were able to take the 19-year-old man down and into custody.
Meanwhile traffic lights were down, and police had to wait for LG&E to arrive to help with the clean up before they could pull the man from car the Lincoln hit. He was taken to the hospital, but police said his injuries were not life-threatening.
Witness Carol Jensen says she was the last person to cross the intersection before the crash.
"I was walking my dog and we got up about 20 feet and I heard something," said Jensen. "It was crash, boom, bang - metal falling - and I saw a police car backing up the street really fast."
Police tell us the 19-year-old responsible for all this will be charged with stealing the car, wanton endangerment, and various traffic offenses.
Just a few hours before this chase, LMPD undercover officers were in the west end working a drug investigation, while they were on the scene, police say two men got in one car and fled. Officers chased the car and a pursuit started. Police say the suspects led the officers onto I-64 east to the 9th Street exit.
Once on 9th Street between Market and Jefferson, police say the two men got out of the car and started running.
After a short foot chase, police were able to tackle one of the suspects and he was taken into custody. Police say they found drugs and weapons were found in the car. The second suspect is still on the loose.
