ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - The families of two murder victims are upset that prosecutors are dropping charges against a former Fort Campbell soldier accused of killing his estranged wife and former mother-in-law in September of 2007. Brent Burke faced four trials in the killings - two ended in mistrials and two never went to the jury.
Three children were inside the home when the two women were murdered.
Patricia Wilburn, the mother of Tracy Burke, one of the two women who was killed, says Prosecutor Chris Shaw sent her a letter a few days ago outlining his plans to dismiss the charges.
The paperwork to dismiss the charges was officially filed at the Hardin County courthouse early Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Wilburn has sent a letter to Shaw expressing her outrage with his decision. In it she writes:
"How can Chris Shaw make such a reckless decision without involving any of the victims' families? He obviously has no conscience or he would realize what a devastating impact this will have on everyone - most importantly, the children."
We are trying to contact Shaw for comment, but we have not been able to reach him so far. We'll have an update coming up on WAVE 3 News.
