U of L releases 2011 Volleyball schedule

2011 U of L Volleyball schedule

With a new head coach and a new home court, the University of Louisville volleyball team will face 10 NCAA-tested opponents and three top 25 teams as part of the 2011 schedule.

The Cardinals, under the guidance of new head coach Anne Kordes, will play six matches downtown in the KFC Yum! Center, and boast a star-studded schedule that will prepare the reigning BIG EAST Tournament Champions for a strong stretch run in the post-season.

"We are extremely excited to be playing in the new arena downtown," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.  "One of the amazing things our fans provide for us is a great home court advantage by selling out Cardinal Arena time after time.  Hopefully we can expand our amazing fan base by packing the Yum!. There is no other team in the country which gets to play in a more gorgeous state-of-the-art arena than we do.  It is a privilege for us to have a place like that to call home."

After starting the season on the road at Georgia Tech Invitational, where they will also face Tennessee Tech, Kansas State, the Cardinals will open the home slate in the friendly confines of Cardinal Arena by hosting the Crowne Plaza Cardinal Classic, featuring Wichita State, Eastern Illinois and Ole Miss on Sept 2-3.

The Cardinals will head to Lexington to play archrival Kentucky in Memorial Coliseum Sept. 7 before heading to the Ohio Bobcat Classic with Ohio, Virginia and Marshall will challenge Kordes' young squad.  The Cardinals will complete the bulk of their non-conference slate with a trip to Champaign for the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge where they will face Illinois and Purdue, both NCAA participants and Top 25 selections on Sept 16-17.

"The most important thing about a schedule is to put a plan in place that will push us toward our goal of a national championship," said Kordes.  "The schedule factors in matches against nationally competitive programs including 10 NCAA teams from last year and three Top 25 teams.  This gives us the opportunity to prepare and be battle-tested going into the BIG EAST slate that will be very competitive this year."'

The Cardinals open the BIG EAST weekend against St. John's and UConn in the Yum! On Sept. 23 and 25.  U of L then hits the road for four straight conference tilts before returning home Oct. 14 to host Cincinnati back at Cardinal Arena.   A quick trip to regional power Lipscomb on Oct. 18 precedes a pair of league matches against travel partners WVU and Pitt on Oct. 22-23.

U of L will then jet to USF for a matchup against the Bulls on Oct. 28 before taking a break from conference to play a midweek home match against  nationally-ranked Tennessee on Nov. 2.  The Cardinals will stay home to play Syracuse and Marquette on Nov. 5-6 before finishing the regular season league slate on the road against Villanova and Georgetown on Nov. 11 and 13.

This year's BIG EAST Championship returns to Milwaukee on Marquette's home floor on Nov. 18-20 and then the Cardinals will host a match against the winner of the OVC at Cardinal Arena as a tune-up for the NCAAs which will be announced the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
