LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – An LMPD spokesperson says off duty police officer Sgt. John Lewis was involved in a deadly crash Friday afternoon.

The crash happened at 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of Smyrna Road and Vandre Avenue in the Highview area. The accident is still under investigation.

MetroSafe dispatch tells WAVE 3 that a blue minivan was making a turn when the vehicle hit a red Ford Taurus.

Five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, but an adult passenger in the Taurus died. He has been identified as 76-year-old Don Braden of Louisville. According to Jefferson County deputy coroner Jack Arnold, Braden died from blunt force injuries he suffered in the crash.

Two children were also in the van, no word on their condition.

Sgt. Lewis has been with LMPD for 20 years. LMPD says Sgt. Lewis is on paid administrative leave until the outcome of the investigation is complete. The LMPD Public Integrity Unit and the LMPD Traffic Unit will be investigating.
