Tornado touches down near Papa John's Cardinal Stadium

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Around 7:30 PM on June 22, a tornado ripped through Louisville, touching down near the intersection of Floyd and Central and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

It was one of the first and hardest hit areas.  Heavy winds snapped power lines and brought down traffic lights down.  The entire intersection was blocked off.

On the corner sits Equipment Depot.  It's entire roof was tore off when the winds came through the area.

It was around 9:00 PM when heavy rains, lightening, and thunder started causing the second issue of the night, flooding.

Cars were getting stuck in the high waters. One SUV had to literally push another car out of the water.

Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad has asked his men and women to wear mourning bands for a former officer shot in the line of duty.  It was more than four decades ago when Detective Bobby Branham was critically wounded.  His widow, Mary Carroll Burnett tells us, her husband had a lot of scar tissue from multiple surgeries after the 1972 shooting and those complications led to his death May 14.
