LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The recently re-opened Eastern Parkway Bridge on the U of L campus has been closed since Monday's water main break, as officials studied to see if it suffered any structural damage.
Wednesday morning at 9:00, officials with the Kentucky Department of Transportation determined that the bridge is safe, but it's not quite back to normal.
The East bound lane is open; but the West bound lane remains closed, and could be for awhile as crews work to replace the broken water main which dates back to the 1920's.
Crews will likely need that West bound lane to complete their work.
Part of the East bound sidewalk did suffer structural damage and will have to be replaced, but is minor in comparison to the overall bridge.
The bridge closed in August of 2009 for a major overhaul, and reopened in June of 2010 at a roughly $8 million price tag that added bicycle lanes, expanded the sidewalk, added a median, and cut the road to a two lane bridge to cut down on speeding in the area.
