LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The process to oust Dr. Judy Green from Louisville Metro Council is moving forward. It is one which has never been done before in Jefferson County and will work a lot like a jury trial. But instead of a jury, Green will face 20 of her peers who sit on the Metro Council.
During a special council meeting Monday afternoon, the council court members took their oath, which was administered by Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell, inside the Metro Council chambers at City Hall.
The first meeting was an organizational one. The biggest sticking point was a date for when the trial-like hearing would start. Council members want it to be fair and fast, so they set dates of August 3 or August 8 to start the three day trial. However Derwin Webb, Green's attorney, said he just got the case and wants more time.
One thing both sides do agree on is this is a very serious matter. The Louisville Metro Ethics Commission ruled Green violated the city's ethics law in two separate cases.
"I can't imagine taking any case more seriously than this case," said Greg Hovious, the metro Council attorney. "I don't know how you express that other than to say this is very serious and I'm very serious about it."
"Her life is on the line right now," said Webb, "her life and her reputation. So we're going to do everything to defend her and protect her reputation and do all we can to try and put this behind her."
Both of the rulings by the Ethics Committee against Green have been appealed, but for now the case to kick her off the council is moving forward.
Two-thirds of the council court will have to agree to remove Green.
