SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Police say a three-year-old girl was found wandering the streets alone in Bullitt County.

The child was found just before 11 a.m. Thursday at the Honey Suckle Trailer Park in Shepherdsville.

Mary Lebau was the person who found the girl. Lebau said she asked the girl questions and could tell she was scared. Shortly after Lebau found the toddler, other neighbors showed up. The residents spent the next hour knocking on doors at all of the homes trying to find the young girl's parents. After having no luck, they called police.

Lebau said the girl was dressed only in a tank top.

"She was little and she was half-naked, so she was exposed," said Lebau.

Shocked to see this, Lebau approached the girl. "She wouldn't talk or anything so we didn't have any clue where she lived or if she even knew where her mom was," said Lebau.

Lebau says she was just feet away from busy Highway 44 in Shepherdsville. "There's no emergency brakes that could save a little girl from 45 mph," said Lebau.

Once the word was out about ten neighbors banded together trying to find out where she should be. "We went from door to door, knocking on everybody's doors trying to find out who she belonged to," said Christopher Thomas, neighbor.

For about an hour, the group had no luck. "After we realized and didn't know that she lived in here we decided to call police," said Thomas.

Neighbors say Shepherdsville Police eventually found her parents.

"At the very end they come out of the house and they walked up to the front and the police put them in the cop car and was talking to them and then they went back to the house," said Thomas.

Neighbors say the couple just got into town late last night and was staying with a relative. WAVE 3 went to his house and were told by the woman inside, it was simply an accident, and that the 3-year-old unlocked the door and got out while her parents were sleeping.

We have learned the father of the young girl is a member of the U.S. military. The girl has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
