LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Monday, August 15 is the first day for the roughly 100,000 JCPS students, but Thursday marked the start of school for thousands of the districts teachers.
JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens stopped by Valley Traditional High School to welcome teachers back, who in turned welcomed her to the district.
With the last-minute rush underway until the start of the school year, many people in the district will be busy.
"People are going to in the building over the weekend to do things; some principals are making that accessible to [teachers] and I'll be out in the community throughout the weekend, I intend to answer some phones on Sunday for people who need last minute answers," Dr. Hargens said.
While she hopes for a successful first day for students, staff, busing, and the student assignment plan, she says her larger goal is a conversation had at the end of the day.
"People said what would be the perfect first day like and that would be when a student learns and goes home and an adult asks them on what they learned today and they have lots to tell," Dr. Hargens said.
