LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Parishioners gathered outside Saint Boniface Catholic Church Sunday morning as the downtown Louisville church celebrated its 175th year of operation.
Mayor Greg Fischer and Councilman David tandy were on hand as two longtime church members unveiled a historical marker.
While the church was celebrating it's history, leaders of st. Boniface said the day was also about the church's future.
"As we celebrate the entire 175 year history of St Boniface, this marks for us the occasion to look back to the past but also to look forward to a growing vibrant community and recognize the tradition we try to live up to," said Rev. Jeff Schooner.
The parish was founded in 1836 and is the oldest catholic parish in Louisville. The present church opened in its current location on East Liberty in 1900. The original church building stood next door to the current one on the site that would later house the parish school.
