LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) - Five years after a plane crashed shortly after taking off from a Kentucky airport, relatives of the 49 people killed will attend a memorial service highlighted by the unveiling of a 17-foot-tall sculpture honoring the victims.
The sculpture by Kentucky artist Douwe (Dow) Blumberg features 49 birds in flight. It sits on a granite circle inscribed with the names of those who died when Comair Flight 5191 crashed into a field near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington on Aug. 27, 2006.
Families had a chance to place mementos in capsules encased in each bird.
Hundreds of relatives plan to attend Saturday's unveiling at the University of Kentucky Arboretum in Lexington.
Lois Turner, whose husband died in the crash, says the artwork will be a place where anyone can go and be comforted.
