Firefighters, neighbors observe 9/11 anniversary

Posted: Updated:

In honor of the 343 firefighters, 72 police officers, 7 EMS workers and the thousands of civilians who died on 9/11, ceremonies, events and even training took place throughout Sunday morning.

The day began with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center.

Fire stations, public parks and even supermarkets held a moment of silence as the country paused to remember the 10th anniversary.

Whether in a store or in their neighborhood, neighbors found a way to honor the heroic spirit that embodies the 9/11 date.

In New Albany, anyone could sign up to don firefighter equipment and climb 84 flights of stairs.

"We're trying to replicate what the firefighters did," said Ashley Barnes. "After going up and down 84 flights, I'm tired. But it just gives you a sense of what those first responders were going through."

"I can't even imagine what it would've been like to wear all that gear," she said.

Each climber received a card with a fallen NYC firefighter's name.

Across the Ohio on the Belvedere Plaza, it was training day for fire departments across the commonwealth.

"They just wanted it on this weekend for the anniversary," said Lt. Scott Lawson, State Fire Rescue. "It's just part of continuing education."

It's a requirement for firefighters to learn the life-saving skills they're taught here - a lesson on a day so many of their comrades perished just 10 years ago.

"It's a very important day. And the most important thing is we don't want to forget," Lawson said.
