The family of alleged hate-crime victim James Craig Anderson is asking the Hinds County district attorney not to seek the death penalty for the Brandon teenager accused of capital murder in the hit-and-run case.
The case has attracted national attention, and the U.S. Department of Justice is also involved in the investigation.
In a letter to D. A. Robert Smith, Barbara Anderson Young writes, "The family's loss will not be lessened by the state taking the life of another."
Deryl Dedmon, 18, is facing capital murder and robbery charges in the case. He is accused of deliberately running down and robbing James Craig Anderson, 49, outside the Metro Inn earlier this year.
"The family's input is something that we do want to honor," Smith told WLBT News on Wednesday. "If something else changes in the future, then we can consider something else, but right now we do want to honor their wishes."
