LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - GE has announced that they are adding 480 jobs to their Louisville Appliance Park operation. Unlike the long lines for Ford jobs this summer, when 1,100 positions were available and 17,000 people applied, the GE applications will not be accepted at the Kentucky Office of Employment or at Appliance Park, but only online.
People wishing to apply for the new factory jobs may do so beginning on Wednesday, September 28 at 6:30 a.m. The starting pay for the jobs is $13.
People may only apply online at selectapplication.com. People who have previously applied to GE must re-apply online to be eligible for the jobs. GE will only accept the first 6,000 applications that are filled out.
Those applications will be accepted starting Wednesday morning at 6:30 am.
IUE-CWA local 761 president Jerry Carney says he expects all 6,000 applications to be filled out within two days.
Carney says the $13.00/an hour factory positions may not pay the best, but it beats the worst-case scenario - losing jobs.
"There's no new jobs hardly coming in at all. Every job we get, every job we secure here in the State of Kentucky is not only important to my members here but the entire Commonwealth," Carney told a group of reporters during a news conference.
In a news release, Mayor Greg Fischer stated, "These new jobs at GE reaffirm our strategy to grow the advanced manufacturing sector in Louisville and the broader Bluegrass region. The strong partnership between GE, the state and the city have paid off as GE begins to insource manufacturing from overseas."
The new jobs will be assembling water heaters and bottom mount refrigerators at the GE plant in Appliance Park.
The application process is part of a $1 billion commitment by GE to hire 1,400 workers by 2014.
