LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Early Tuesday morning, the Kentucky Department of Education released the 2010-2011 Kentucky Core Content Test results and No Child Left Behind reports. Although Jefferson County Public Schools certainly made some strides, the district also recognized the need for improvement.
Among Jefferson County Public Schools, six schools have been designated as persistently low achieving. The good news for those schools is that Western and Frost Middle schools, as well as The Academy at Shawnee, Fern Creek, Valley and Western High schools all made gains in the percentage of students scoring proficient or higher in math and reading for the 2010-2011 school year, reducing their percentage of novices in those areas.
No Child Left Behind requires schools to set goals for improvement in reading and math. Western High School and the Academy at Shawnee each achieved 100 percent of their goals. Fern Creek High met 11 of 13 and Western Middle school met 14 of 16. Not performing as well was Frost Middle, which only made 5 of 13 goals, that's 38 percent.
District wide, JCPS met 13 of 25 goals or 52 percent, the same result as the 2009-2010 school year. Twenty-two of 133 JCPS schools met 100 percent of their goals. The breakdown: 14 elementary schools, 1 middle school (Barret Traditional) and 7 high schools. Last year, 26 schools met all goals.
JCPS points out 30 other schools did meet 80 percent or more of their targets.
As for Kentucky Core Content test scores, JCPS high schools showed a bigger increase than the state average in reading, math, science and social studies.
Overall in Jefferson County, proficient and distinguished scores for high schools are up from 62 to 70 percent in reading and 40 to 55 percent in math. Western High School, in particular, made impressive gains taking a 46.84 in reading to a 75.00 and a 12.68 in math to a 42.69. But overall the percentage of all JCPS students scoring proficient or distinguished are still below state averages.
JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens said in part, "I am pleased by the improvement we're seeing at all levels - elementary, middle and high. This exemplifies the commitment to achievement made by students and staff...yet, the numbers show we still have a significant challenge ahead of us."
