LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Keep diversity, but shorten bus times, that's what JCPS officials are working toward with the goal to improve the student assignment plan by next year.

School officials say revamping the student assignment plan is work in progress. Monday's meeting comes a week after the consultant the district hired recommended a major overhaul.

"This is just a draft, this is just a starting point, this is just a map," said Jack Jacobs, JCPS Executive Director of Student Assignment Health and Wellness.

JCPS board members and other school officials met for the first time on Monday since consultant Dr. Gary Orfield gave his analysis on how to improve the current student assignment plan.

"We need to make sure that we are clear on his recommendations, make sure that we analyze capacity issues, school issues, and make sure that we understand what he has recommended to us," said Jacobs.

After months of research, last week Orfield offered a plan he says would keep diversity, but cut down on long bus rides, something the district is striving for.

"I think that if we can reduce bus times, people think that's the important thing that we can do," said Carol Haddad, JCPS board member.

Orfield believes that can be achieved by ending the current plan of six elementary clusters, and breaking the county down into 13 smaller clusters.

"We will reduce ride times for most children, not all because you still have some distances and no interstates in our 13 cluster plan," said Rick Caple, JCPS Director of Transportation.

The school district wants to know what you think about Dr. Orfield's proposal. JCPS will hold five community feedback sessions.
