Second family charged with false enrollment in Oldham Co. schools

LA GRANGE, KY (WAVE) - The Oldham County Schools have filed criminal charges against a second family who allegedly used a false home address so their child could attend school there.

John Buehner was charged with theft by deception Thursday for enrolling his child at Oldham County Middle School in Buckner. The theft charge stems from the  taxpayer money spent to educate his child for the first 32 days of the school year, which the district calculates at about $600.

Buehner told the school system he lived in Oldham County, but Oldham County Assistant Superintendent Dan Orman said their investigation found the father was actually living in Jefferson County, seen by some parents as a less desirable school district.

Orman said it's fair to say the district is trying to send a message to parents lying about or considering lying about addresses to enroll their kids in Oldham County Schools.

"It's about the home school district it's about Oldham County's district and most important it's about those children being asked by their parents and family members to lie," Orman said.

This is the second time since school started that the district has filed charges against a family as it investigates whether people really live in their district or are using a different address than their own.

WAVE 3 Troubleshooter Eric Flack knocked on the door of the LaGrange home where Buehner claims to be living but no one answered.

On Monday, Louisville resident Charles Lauron was arraigned in Oldham County Court on similar theft charges. Orman said Lauron faked an Oldham County address for the past 8 years so his son could be educated in its school district.

Orman said that costs the school district more than $26,000. Lauron pled not guilty and his attorney said the charges aren't true.

Orman said 14 other families totaling 22 Oldham County Students remain under investigation for questions about their residency. He said if the district finds evidence they were willfully trying to lie to the school district by faking address, Orman said they'll be charged criminally too.
