ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – The battle to create jobs is front and center in the presidential race and Kentucky has its own version.

The Republican candidate for governor of the Commonwealth brought in a heavy hitter to help his campaign Thursday. David Williams got support from Mitch McConnell as Williams tries to overcome a big deficit in the polls with his jobs plan.

The pair spoke to business leaders in Hardin County where Williams pointed to Indiana and Ohio creating more jobs than Kentucky.

"You have Mitch Daniels and John Kasich and they're picking jobs from Kentucky left and right every day," Williams said. "Only last week Omnicare was recruited to go across the river in Cincinnati and other big businesses and the reasons are because of public policies in those states."

Williams said Kentucky needs to revamp its tax structure to a consumption model instead of income tax. He also wants Kentucky to become a right to work state, reform new pension employees to a 401(k) type system. Those are things that Kentucky's senior senator said that can only happen with Williams in the governor's office.

"But to turn Kentucky around you need to turn Kentucky state government around," said McConnell, "and the way to do that I assure you is to elect David Williams governor."

McConnell said despite Williams trailing by a large margin in the polls Kentuckians are just starting to pay attention to the race. McConnell also pointed out that he came back from an even bigger deficit to become a senator.
