SHELBYVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A three vehicle crash on Interstate 64 at exit 35 in Shelby County sent two people to the hospital and caused traffic to be detoured in both directions Thursday night.
According to Kentucky State Police, just after 9 p.m. a Dodge pickup truck and a tractor-trailer crashed into each other in the eastbound lanes just past the Exit 35 entrance ramp. The two vehicles went into the median hitting the middle barrier of the overpass.
The driver of a westbound tractor-trailer saw that accident as it was happening and tried to swerve to avoid it fearing the other vehicles might move into the westbound lanes. That semi also crashed as a result.
One person was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital. Another person in the crash was also taken to University Hospital to be checked out. Their conditions are not known.
Because the accidents happened under the overpass for Highway 53, police were able to detour traffic onto the I-64 off- ramps at exit 35. That meant drivers were able to go around the crash and get back onto the interstate in both directions.
The cause of the crash is still not known at this time.
