Family remembers Louisville teen on five-year murder mystery anniversary

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A murder mystery continues five years later for the family of 18-year-old Kyle Haywood.  There have been no arrests or any real significant clues to help police crack the case that led to the teen's 2006 murder.

"Sometimes it seems like just yesterday," said Donna Haywood, Kyle's mother.

That 'yesterday' was exactly 5 years ago.

"I can still remember him coming home that night; he'd been to school all day and working and wanted to go out and relax," she said.

That night of relaxation turned into a haunting memory of the last time she saw her son alive.

"The next thing we knew there was someone at the door from the coroner's office and police coming in to tell us," she said.

What police haven't been to tell anyone is who did it, and why.  Haywood was shot to death as he sat with a friend in a parked car on the iconic Cherokee Circle.

Months later, detectives would release a sketch of how that friend and witnesses describe the shooter, but it hasn't cracked the case and has just added more mystery to the whole situation.

"You know I wonder how accurate that was; we just don't know how truthful were being at the time that's why we're not real sure about the sketches," Haywood said.

Kyle was a senior at Saint Xavier High School; now an X marks a hole in the hearts of family and friends who just want answers and, for now, can only imagine getting them.

"While we miss him we know he's better off where he is and we'll be with him someday," Haywood said.
