U of L gives Strong contract extension, raise

By Kent Taylor

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - U of L and head football coach Charlie Strong have agreed to a 7 year contract extension.

Strong had four years remaining on his original contract.

The new deal ups his base salary from $1.6 million to $2.3 million dollars, and increases the buyout terms in the contract. If Strong were to leave U of L before June 30, 2012, he would owe the University $2.5 million dollars. That amount decreases in various increments to $1 million from July 1, 2016-June 30, 2018.

Strong is 9-10 in his two seasons at U of L, including 7-6 in 2010 and the Cards first bowl trip in four seasons. They defeated Southern Miss 31-28 in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl. The Cards are 2-4 in 2011 and host Rutgers (5-1) Friday night at 8 p.m.

"It's something that we have been working on since last November," U of L vice-president of athletics Tom Jurich said. "We really want to build consistency and stability in our program."
