NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – With Election Day fast approaching, the Floyd County Clerk says that people are making sure they will be able to exercise their right to vote by asking for absentee ballots.
According to Linda Moeller, her office has seen the an increase in absentee ballots because of the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge and the fear of voters that they will not be able to get to their polling location before the end of voting.
Moelller said Floyd County will extend early voting the County Clerk's office located at 311 Hauss Square, Room 235. Voters can cast ballots on the following dates:
- Sat. Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. til 3 p.m.
- Fri. Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. til 6 p.m.
- Sat. Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. til 3 p.m.
- Sun. Nov. 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Early voting will also be available as usual until Noon on Nov. 7, the Monday before Election Day.
Floyd County officials said the County Elections Board will keep their options open on Election Day. If there is a major accident or other bridge-related event that causes a traffic delay, polling hours on Election Day could be extended.
Moeller said Floyd County residents are encouraged to vote early and she said they don't need a special reason to do so.
