Work begins to repair Sherman Minton Bridge

Posted: Updated:

NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Are you wondering what's happening with that construction on the Sherman Minton Bridge? We've gotten word it's finally started.

Tuesday was the first day Hall Contracting was actually up on the Sherman Minton, about 15 days after they were awarded the bid to fix the unstable structure. An INDOT spokesperson said right now they are fixing the deck and installing platforms.

INDOT said Hall Contracting will also be sand blasting and prepping the structure before they can add about 2.4 million tons of steel to make it safe again. According to INDOT, the steel won't arrive until mid-December.

Behind the scenes INDOT said they are holding weekly meetings to keep up to date on Hall's work. Until now those meetings have been reviews and approvals of the company's construction plans.

While some may be concerned that they haven't seen any work happening until now, INDOT said the process is actually moving faster than most. They say Hall still has to get it done by March 2 or they'll be fined $100,000 each day past that date.
