LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - When trainers and owners dine together Thursday night during an opening event to the Breeders' Cup, they'll be tasting the work of local culinary students and international chefs.
The welcome party, "Taste of the World," is an invitation-only event hosted by celebrity chef Bobby Flay.
Chefs from around the globe are in Louisville preparing dishes for the event. However, the prep work wasn't done overseas or in a five-star kitchen.
Instead, culinary students at Jefferson Community and Technical College worked as sous chefs throughout the week.
"They pretty much just hand-picked the best and dropped them into our culinary school," said Damaris Phillips, a Culinary Arts Instructor.
The students worked alongside 18 chefs from 15 countries - all represented in the Breeders' Cup world championships.
The elaborate menu includes Juniper Smoked Gichigami Steelhead Trout with Smoked Parsnip, Birch Infused Caviar, Ostrich neck and bone marrow infused butter.
"There aren't very many opportunities that you get so much talent concentrated into one room. And many of these ingredients have never been in this kitchen before," Phillips said.
Nearly 700 owners, breeders and guests will feast on the delicacies at Bowman Field.
