Half price admission at Louisville Zoo through February with canned good

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) - You can save some money on a trip to the zoo, while helping feed needy families, starting Friday.

The Louisville Zoo is teaming up with Dare to Care Food Bank, offering half price admission if you donate one canned good per person starting today.

This is the third year for the special deal, and canned food drive.  Zoo patrons have collected 8000 lbs of food in the past two years, enough for 6000 meals.

And it includes a chance to see Qannic, the polar bear cub orphaned in Alaska.  We're told she's now a healthy 154 pounds and swimming in an 80-thousand gallon pool at glacier run.  The best times to see her are from 10 a.m.to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.

The deal runs through February 29th of next year.  The offer is valid for regular adult or child admission and not for Santa's Safari, other special fee-based programs, for pre-paid groups or with other discounts.

Some of Dare to Care Food Bank's most needed items are canned meats, which includes tuna, pork and beans, hearty canned soups, chicken and dumplings, ham, beef stew, chili with meat sauce, ravioli with meat sauce, spaghetti with meatballs, as well as canned vegetables and fruits, which includes corn, green beans, peas, carrots, peaches, oranges, pineapple and fruit juices. Peanut Butter, Saltines, Rice, Spaghetti, canned Spaghetti Sauce and cold and hot boxed cereal are also needed. Please avoid glass containers.

The Zoo is open daily year round. Fall/winter hours continue through February, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (exit by 5 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
