An App for Everything: Mobile coupon apps

Posted: Updated:

(WAVE) - It's possible now through a growing number of mobile coupon apps you can download right to your phone claim they can save you money with your smartphone. but are they that useful? Two coupon savvy women put some popular apps to the test to find out which ones are worth the download and which ones to avoid.

Pam Kayler and Julie Schoolfield love a bargain.

"That's my goal," says Kayler. "If it's under a dollar I'll buy it."

So tempting them with mobile coupon apps you can download for free on your smartphone was easy to do.

How do they work? You just download the ap, and look for deals at nearby stores. Sometimes you can pull up a coupon with a barcode to be scanned right there. Other stores have you download the coupon onto the store's discount card through a code

"The easiest thing is you don't have to clip," says Schoolfield.

Pam and Julie tested five different apps: Geopon, Cellfire, Yowza, Copious, and the Target ap. When it comes to the ones they liked best, Target was a big favorite because it sends shoppers a text to notify them coupons are available.

"I just pull it up and they scan it," Pam said.

"Target I really like it more because it actually tells me when there's a coupon," Julie agreed.

The ladies also like Geopon because it had familiar places to shop.

"It lists different stores in ABC order," says Pam. "You just go to the store and see if there are any coupons."

Cellfire ranked just OK because it had a fewer local stores. Meanwhile they say Yowza and Coupious were pretty much useless

"I mean it's good they are free but I wouldn't recommend it to anybody," they say.

Apps that didn't fair well only did so because the stores included just aren't located in their area. Meanwhile, Pam and Julie say they love the concept, and hope mobile apps are the coupon way of the future.
