SHELBYVILLE, KY (WAVE) -  A 37-year-old man has been arrested for the assault of a Shelby County woman found barely alive on the side of the road.

A passerby found a woman along the side of Mount Eden Road in Shelby County 10 days ago. Investigators say it was 24-year-old Denisse Escareno, whose injuries were severe.

"When we first got the call we didn't even know who Denisse was at that point in time," said Detective Eric Hettinger with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

Hettinger says with some clues from the community they were able identify a suspect in this case and knew they wanted to speak with Mark Bruner of Taylorsville.

"Once we were able to identify him and locate him, we brought him in for questioning," said Hettinger. "Mr. Bruner was cooperative with the investigation and subsequently an arrest was made."

Hettinger said on November 5 Bruner offered to give Escareno a ride when he saw her walking alone on Midland Trail Road in Shelbyville. According to Hettinger the two have never met before, but he believes Escareno got into Bruner's car on her own free will.

Detectives say they were in the car for about an hour. Hettinger said Bruner told detectives the two got in a fight inside the car.

"Mr. Bruner allegedly stabbed Denisse twice and then we believe she jumped from the vehicle," said Hettinger.

With the car still in motion, Hettinger believes some of her injuries could have come from that fall. Bruner told detectives he stabbed her out of fear.

While Escareno cannot speak for herself about what happened that day, friends and family remain by her side waiting and praying for her to come out of this.

"She has the biggest heart, she wouldn't hurt anybody or have problems with anybody," said Krissi Tipton, victim's aunt.

Bruner has a criminal history in Kentucky having been charged with theft a few times and criminal trespassing. He remains behind bars at the Shelby County Jail.
