PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A man accused of breaking into an apartment and molesting a young girl has been sentenced to 24 years in prison and a lifetime of probation upon his release.

Court records show Ricardo Torres Marquez was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Commissioner Patricia Starr.

Marquez had pleaded guilty to sexual conduct of a minor and two counts of attempt to commit molestation of a child.

In 2011, he removed the screen from a window and entered an apartment in the area 7200 W. McDowell Road, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department.

Thompson said Marquez molested the girl in the apartment and tried to carry her out the front door.

Sleeping family members, including her parents and grandmother, who were in other rooms, awoke and were able to detain the man until the police could arrive, Thompson said.

The victim had several siblings in the same room, but it is not believed they were harmed, Thompson said.

The family said they did not know Marquez.
