Gemologist wins Ky Jockey Club Stakes, remains unbeaten ed

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Gemologist stamped himself a Kentucky Derby hopeful with a 1 3/4-length victory Saturday in the $178,200 Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

The 2-year-old son of Tiznow dueled with early leader Ever So Lucky before kicking in the final furlong under jockey Javier Castellano. The winner paid $8.60, $4 and $3.60, Ever So Lucky, the 8-5 favorite in the field of 11, returned $3.60 and $3, and Timely Tally paid $4.20.

Gemologist earned his first stakes win to remain undefeated in three career starts. He covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.46.

Earlier on the card, the filly On Fire Baby captured the Golden Rod Stakes.  Her trainer, Gary Hartlage said she would nominated to both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.
