JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - More changes could be on the way for Greater Clark County Schools after a controversial proposal to close one of its elementary schools. WAVE 3 News has learned the district could be searching for a new superintendent.
This comes as the school board scrambles to slash around $4 million from its budget.
A former JCPS Superintendent, Dr. Stephen Daeschner has been criticized for being one of the top paid superintendents in the state of Indiana -- making nearly a quarter of a million dollars -- at a time when the district is struggling financially.
Reached by phone Sunday afternoon, a school board member tells WAVE 3 the board must decide in December whether they'll renew his three year contract, which runs out in May of 2012.
The controversial option of closing Maple Elementary was heralded as a way to trim costs, but board members struggled with just how much money would be saved and if the move would overwhelm other elementary schools.
At the November 15 meeting, one board member requested a vote to take the proposal of closing Maple off the table; it passed, earning a standing ovation from the entire audience.
Now, more tough decisions are expected at their December meeting, which could include cuts in staff.
At the December 6 meeting, the board could formally announce whether they plan to continue with Dr. Stephen Daeschner as leader of the district. If they do keep him, it could be at a significantly lowered salary.
In a May 2009 story, WAVE 3 reported that Dr. Daeschner would have a $225,000 base salary, plus benefits. That amount of compensation is $75,000 more than what was budgeted and the board hoped it would be supplemented by private funds.
At the time, board members and the Jeffersonville mayor, Tom Galligan, say the extra expense is worth it because Daeschner has the qualifications the Greater Clark County Schools need.
The previous salary for the school superintendent was $160,000.
