Firefighters, regulators respond to alcohol spill

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (AP) - Firefighters and environmental regulators have responded after nearly 6,400 gallons of alcohol spilled at a central Kentucky distillery.

Some of the 180-proof alcohol was captured by a temporary dike at Heaven Hill distillery, but Bardstown Fire Chief Anthony Mattingly told The Courier-Journal that much of the liquid spilled into a creek and a lake near the facility.

The spill happened Saturday when a tanker was delivering a load of alcohol to the Nelson County distillery and a shutoff valve was left open.

Mattingly says an environmental contractor helped mitigate damage from the spill.
