Level one hazmat declared after house explodes in Okolona

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Firefighters on the scene of a home that exploded and is still burning in Okolona.

Neighbors say LG&E crews were at the home on River Trail Place around 7:00 a.m. working on a gas line, they heard a loud boom, looked out the window, and saw the "house was gone."

Update 9:15 a.m. Firefighters have extinguished the flames that leveled the home on River Trial Place and damaged at least two others. They are currently flushing out the storm sewer lines with water. Okolona's fire chief says there are pockets of gas in the storm sewer lines that pose a lower level explosion threat.

LG&E says they were called by the homeowners who smelled gas. Not long after arriving, the home burst into flames. A man, his wife and their two year old daughter were able to make it out of the home with just seconds to spare. They say their family pet, a golden retriever, did not.

About 15 to 20 homes were evacuated. LG&E says they have cut the gas and electric to this area as a precaution. It's likely to be off for several hours as firefighters continue their investigation.

Update 10:12 a.m. A level one hazmat has been declared in the area by River Trail Place in Okolona where a home exploded earlier this morning.

At least two more possible gas leaks have been found in the lines near the house fire. The problem is still being investigated and we will bring you more information as we get it on WAVE 3.com.
