Our "Child Welfare" and "Child Abuse" editorials received some pointed feedback.
James responded: "Get to the real problem – severe underfunding and the prospect of more tragedies resulting from additional cuts in the state budget. Social services agencies are woefully underfunded. Social workers are overworked and underpaid, with enormous case loads far in excess of what is reasonable or appropriate. The result is burnout, short retention, high turnover rate, and young, inexperienced employees taking on complex case loads that made experienced caseworkers quit out of frustration. No wonder so many mistakes are made and foolish cover-ups attempted."
Baxter emailed: "There is an extremely high correlation between animal abuse and the incidence of child and elder abuse. Kentucky is the dead bottom of states in animal protection laws. Coincidence that Kentucky has such high child abuse?"
Our "New Term, Same Challenge" editorial prompted this response from James: "The only reason Steve Beshear is governor is because the Republican party is this state is disorganized and weak."
We appreciate and welcome all of your feedback.
