LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Archdiocese of Louisville announced that retired Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly has died. He was 80 years old. He died at his home in retirement, Holy Trinity parish in Louisville.

Archbishop Kelly led the Archdiocese from February 1982 until his retirement in August 2007. The year 2007 also marked his 55th year as a Dominican, 30 years as a bishop, and 25 years as Archbishop.

Kelly's replacement, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, said the local church "has lost a friend, humble servant and dedicated man of God."

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. WAVE3 expects to speak with Archbishop Kurtz about the death of Archbishop Kelly sometime this afternoon.

Archbishop Kelly also led Louisville's Catholics through the priest sexual abuse settlements  and implemented new policies on preventing and reporting sex abuse. The Archdiocese paid nearly $30 million in settlements and other expenses related to abuse cases.
