LOUISVILLE (WAVE) - An animal hoarding case in Mississippi has led to ten dogs being brought to the New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter for treatment and adoption.
Troy Snell with the Humane Society of the United States says that out of 103 dogs that were rescued in early December, 10 are being taken to New Albany. Another 35 dogs will be taken to shelters in Chicago. Many of those dogs suffered from medical problems ranging from skin infections to untreated wounds and many more were found in outdoor cages with little or no protection from the elements.
"It was a lady that started out as a rescue and got overwhelmed, overwhelmed with not being able to place them or dogs dropped off and she just, she needed help."
Snell Says it's become a common problem. In the last year he's been on 20 deployments all across the U.S. where people who mean well take in animals and then before they realize it, they're overwhelmed and can't provide or pay for proper care. Friday ten such dogs were dropped off at the New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter where they'll eventually be adopted out to the public. Director, David Hall, says he's happy to be in a situation where they can provide help to these dogs in need.
"We are a shelter partner with H.S.U.S. which means that when a natural disaster occurs or any kind of puppy mill is broken down or anytime H.S.U.S. has extra animals that they are finding places for, we are contacted and asked if we can assist."
Hall says the dogs that arrived in New Albany range from two to four years of age and some still have medical problems that need attention before they can be adopted.
" It's nothing major, it's nothing that can't be repaired with the proper medical attention which is what has been applied and what we'll be applying also in assisting the animals to having a comfortable rest of their lives."
Hall says that the newly acquired dogs will be going through medical checks for about the next week and should start to become available for adoption by late next week.
Anyone interested in possibly adopting one of the dogs that have been rescued can check the New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter web site at www.nafcanimalshelter.org.
