LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's a chilling confession of a child killer.
Audio tape interviews released Wednesday from Louisville Metro Police reveal what convicted sex offender and murderer Cecil New told police about the 2007 death of 4-year-old Ivan Cano.
New pled guilty just before his 2010 trial was set to begin. Monday, the retired LMPD investigator on the case told us what New said about the heinous crime from his prison cell last year. Now the man police call a monster gives his version of the truth.
"I just snapped and lost my cool and that was it," said New of Ivan's murder.
Troy Pitcock, who is now retired as a major from LMPD, and other LMPD detectives went to the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville in May 2011 to get answers. New told them he had been watching Ivan in their neighborhood near Churchill Downs. According to New, he was drinking beer when he claims the little boy wandered into his apartment.
"I mean, I was like, ‘oh God! What's this boy doing in my apartment?'" New told them of allegedly discovering the boy,
New said he got angry at the child and feared that neighbors who knew he was a registered sex offender would call police. So, New said decided to drown Ivan in the bathtub.
New: "He's already calling and hollerin' for his Mama!"
Detective: "What did you do? Did you hold him down by his arms? "
He continues to question New.
Detective: "How did you drown him?"
New: "I stepped in and just had my foot on his chest."
Detective: "To where he couldn't raise up?"
New: "Right."
As the questioning went on, New continued to deny a sexual assault.
Detective: "Did you strip him naked?"
New: "Just from the waist down."
Detective: "Why didn't you take his shirt off?"
New: "I don't know."
Detective: "OK Cecil, you've got this, it's your chance OK? It's gonna clear your soul, son."
In further questioning, New was asked if he sexually assaulted Ivan.
Detective: "We've gotta know, did you touch the little boy and be God's honest with me, OK?"
New: "No, I didn't."
Detective: "Did you think of it?"
New: "I thought about it yeah."
Detective: "Were you gonna do it?"
New: "Uh, I was."
Detective: "If you had more time during that time, like we discussed earlier, you would have sexually assaulted him?"
New: "I probably would."
Detective: "Do you think his screaming stopped you, do you think maybe you were worried somebody was gonna catch you or come check and see what was going on?"
New: "Yeah, because I mean, I thought, I didn't know if the guy upstairs was home or not."
New says he put the boy in a trash bag after killing him.
Detective: "Did you ever think about letting him go?"
New: " Uh no, but, I wish I would have."
Detective: "You'd do it again, wouldn't you?"
New: "Well, I can't say that I wouldn't."
Detective: "I can say that you would and I think you'd tend to agree with me wouldn't you?"
New: "I probably would."
This is only Cecil New's version of the events. Some of the evidence is not consistent with his story like why Ivan had alcohol in his system when New claims he didn't give him any.
Ivan's mother does not believe her son walked into New's apartment as the killer suggests.
Although investigators are skeptical about his sincerity, New said several times during the interview that he was sorry he committed the murder.
