Senator writes check for remainder of budget

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is giving back half a million dollars to Uncle Sam.

The senator presented a check in Louisville Thursday with the remainder of his $3 million budget.

Kentucky's junior senator said his staff saved the money simply by watching what they spent. Sen. Paul said it will go back into the U.S. Treasury to offset the debt.

"If every senator did this it would be $80 million," said Sen. Paul. "If every congressman did sort of a proportional amount, somewhere around $200,000, it would be over $130 million so it's not an insignificant amount of money."

Sen. Paul said he hopes to introduce legislation soon that would award bonuses to public leaders who come in under budget.
