LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Several groups are coming out in support of the JCPS assignment plan, as the case trying to strike it down goes to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
Last year, a state appeals court ruled the current assignment plan violates state law.
In November, the Kentucky Supreme Court said it will take up the case.
Tuesday another group of parents, the Jefferson County Teachers Association and the League of Women Voters of Louisville and Jefferson County, Inc. plans to add their voices to the case. Attorneys for the groups plan to file an Amicus Curiae, or "friend of the court", motion and brief with the Supreme Court. If the court accepts the motion, the groups will be able to testify during the school district's arguments.
In the written brief, the groups say that the parents who brought the case against JCPS challenging the current student assignment plan, and wanting to move to a system based on neighborhood schools, is a, "small, but vocal an persistent, minority." The parents, teachers and concerned citizens behind the motion say they are in an identical situation as the parents who started the litigation, and that the, "wish to have their voice heard in this case."
Attorneys plan to file the motion and brief Tuesday afternoon.
