LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The 16 year-old who survived a car wreck in Spencer County Wednesday is out of the hospital. Jenna Rigsby was released from Kosair Children's Hospital Thursday. Her two classmates at Spencer County High school, 16 year-old Mikie Monroe and 17 year-old Shelby Bockting both passed away.
Remains of police tape and spray paint on Mike Brown Road just off Kentucky 1633 remind those driving by about what went wrong on Wednesday afternoon.
"Right now I think we're in the numb stage," says Monroe family friend Belinda Sheeley.
It was right after school let out when the pickup carrying the high school juniors went off the side of the road killing Monroe and Bockting and injuring Rigsby. It doesn't matter who you ask around Spencer County, everyone will tell you about the girls. How wonderful they were.
"Everybody knows who Mikie is. Everybody knows who Shelby is and Jenna. The whole community feels the loss," explains Sheeley.
Both Mikie and Shelby played softball. In the recreation league, Mikie's mom was right there coaching her little girl.
"Just had the best time. She's over on the bench cheering and coaching and fussing 'em, come on. It was so much fun to watch them," says Sheeley.
It's those happy moments Sheeley is trying to hold onto now, like the time Mikie really showed just how outdoors she was. "What an understatement. Not one single man in Spencer County does not admire the great buck she got."
Also the school photographer - Sheeley watched the girls grow up through pictures. "Shelby liked to do the silly pictures. They were just happy girls. They're beautiful kids."
It's those pictures she's using as an outlet to grieve. She's making copies to give to the families and to the girl's classmates.
"A great memory to hold onto and I just wanted to give them one little piece of that," says Sheeley.
Monroe and Bockting will have a joint funeral. Visitation is 2 until 8 on Friday and Noon until 8 on Saturday and Greenwell, Jenkins and Houghlin funeral home in Talyorsville. On Sunday, there will be a visitation from 9 until 2 at Spencer County High School. Their funeral will take place at the high school at 2 on Sunday.
