LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Bridge traffic has impacted everyone from truck drivers to first responders and even college students who rely on the bridge to get to and from class.
The bridge is a hot topic for students at IU Southeast.
"They're just really frustrated with it because everyone has problems getting to class on time," said sophomore Katrina Edwards.
Edwards commutes from her parents' home in Shepherdsville, KY at least once a week, "I'm thinking about getting an apartment somewhere close to here so it won't be that bad,"
IUS has seen a slight change in enrollment since the Sherman Minton closed down. About one third of students, faculty, and staff commute from Kentucky.
"We've seen a slight difference in our sophomore and freshman class with the rerun rate for Kentucky students verse Indiana students with Kentucky students returning at a slightly lower rate than our Indiana students are," said Jenny Johnson Wolf, IUS media relations. "So we are seeing a small impact."
At the University of Louisville there are fewer southern Indiana students in Spring 2012 than Fall 2011, however, there are fewer students listed in the preliminary data overall. The percentages of southern Indiana students from Fall to Spring are almost equal.
Still most people who sit in bridge traffic are keeping an eye on March 1st, which is still the projected open date.
"The repair schedule at this point has not been impacted thanks to the mild winter," said Greg Prince of INDOT.
Jan. 20, marked the 95th day of repair work. Prince said crews have been working 12 hour shifts, seven days a week to fix the bridge.
