Buggeland sentenced to life for killing parents; parole possible

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A Hardin County man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the brutal murders of his parents was sentenced Tuesday morning to life in prison. He could be eligible for parole after serving twenty years.

Erik Buggeland, 36, admitted to the September 2010 killings in December. Court testimony revealed that Buggeland used a dumbbell to beat to death his mother, Margaret, and fatally stabbed and beat his father, Terje. Both victims were retired doctors.

Shortly after the murders, Buggeland's brother, Steven, said that both of them suffer from Schizoaffective Disorder which affects their moods and can cause delusions and/or hallucinations.

Erik Buggeland pleaded guilty to two murder charges, two charges of robbery in the first degree and one charge of theft by unlawful taking of over $500.
