LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – St. Matthews Police need your help to track down a suspect accused of robbing a store clerk at gun-point, and it is all caught on camera. It happened at the St. Matthews Mini Mart on Wallace Avenue.
For many in St. Matthews, the Mini Mart is a go-to spot. "I come up here all the time, since I was a little kid really," said Stephen Prince, St. Matthews resident.
A shop, where you will see familiar faces and where people know your name. "Actually my wedding photos are on the wall in there," said Sarah Duffy, St. Matthews resident.
But what else is now on their wall is a wanted poster because on Wednesday night, a sense of their security was taken when police say a man walked through the door.
"It's scary," said Duffy. "It's definitely scary. You think you are safe around here, but you never know."
St. Matthews Police Sgt. Charlie Portman says the suspect in his late teens early twenty's approached the clerk and asked for a cigar. The clerk set it down on the counter and that's when police say the suspect pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and demanded money.
"I saw cops shining their flashlights, but I was just worried that my buddy in there was hurt, but thank God that everything is ok," said Duffy.
"It's pretty brazen for someone to walk into a store and point a gun at someone," said Portman. "We consider that very aggressive and very dangerous and we would like to get this guy off the streets."
Police say the clerk passed over some cash and then left the store. Just across the street at Mary Katherine's and Me, owner Mary Joe Brown says it's unfortunate that this happened.
"I really do think that this is a 99% safe neighborhood," said Brown. The St. Matthews FOP is right across the street and they ride this area all the time, so I think we all have to be vigilant."
"It's good they got that at least and got his face, so now everybody knows who to look out for," said Prince.
The suspect is wanted for robbery in the first degree. If you have any information about the man in video you are asked to give St. Matthews Police a call at 893-9000.
