Teenage girl in critical condition after being struck, dragged by pick-up

BARDSTOWN, KY (WAVE) - An afternoon with friends takes a tragic turn Sunday afternoon for a Nelson County High School freshman, after she was hit by a car on a busy road in Bardstown.

Orange police paint remains fresh on North Third Street in Bardstown, as police take notes and measurements to reconstruct the scene for additional evidence and information.

"They were having a fun Sunday afternoon and they said she lost control of the ball and it went across the ball and she went to retrieve it and that's when the accident occurred," said Bardstown Police Officer Tom Blair.

Police say the 14-year-old girl crossed two lanes of traffic by a Wendy's restaurant, but may have had trouble seeing the other two lanes of the highway.

"The witness says that she tried to stop and that's when she lost her balance and fell and then she was caught underneath the truck," Blair told WAVE 3 News.

From there, police say she pinned underneath a Ford Ranger pick-up truck, run over by one of its tires, and was then drug down the road.

"Preliminary estimates is probably about 20 feet and she had massive head injuries, I thought she probably had a broken leg, she was unconscious at the time we got there and a lot of blood," Blair explained.

The teen was rushed to Flaget Memorial Hospital, but her injuries were so severe that she immediately had to be airlifted to Kosair Children's Hospital in downtown Louisville.

"It would break your heart," said her friend Carlos Sustaita.

Friends went to school Monday, hearing more about the news.

"People talked and prayed," Sustaita said.

And that was at Bardstown High School - not even the school she attends. She's a freshman at nearby Nelson County High School, where she's described as a popular, fun-loving student.

For now, friends are focusing on the good times, like their weekend roller skate outings.

"We go there every weekend or so, have our laughs and the first time I went there and I fell on my butt and she was there for me," Sustaita said.

And everyone's just hoping to be there for her during this fight for her life.

"It's never easy seeing a child like that I don't care how many you go to because you just feel so helpless and that's what always gets me," Officer Blair said.

Bardstown Police say no one is facing charges at this time, calling it an unfortunate accident. A car was able to stop and avoid hitting the girl, but it's believed as a result of that, the pick-up truck driver didn't see her and did hit her.

Police say both drivers are devastated. The name of the teen isn't being released by police at this time. She was last listed in critical condition.
